Module 1 First Assignment - Data, Visualization, Knowledge & Models

The following visualization was taken from the human rights organization VisualizingPalestine.org. It represents the rise of anti-boycott legislation in the United States, with the incipience of this trend in 2014 - legislation against the boycott of the State of Israel.

I chose this visualization because of its pertinence to the political climate today, as it reflects domestic legislative responses to the international crisis of the genocide of the Palestinian people, as well as the effect of this legislation setting a precedent for other anti-boycott legislation in other areas of the political arena in the United States.

The data is visualized as groups of circles representing individual laws against boycotting, which are color coded to represent specific categories of laws, and shaded to represent their status of legislation. The groups of circles are organized by year, dating from 2014 to 2023. There are annotations describing the various bills that have been introduced as measures against boycotting.

I think the model of representing number and type of boycott bills introduced per year is an effective way to visualize this data because it clearly expresses the agenda of the legislative body of the United States as widely antithetical to the plight of the Palestinian people and their sympathizers. It also represents the degree of intensity with which the legislative body is attacking American's First Amendment rights of freedom of speech in other areas of culture and politics. The knowledge that we can gain from this particular visualization is that there is a dedicated effort on the part of American lawmakers to attack this First Amendment right that is directly inspired by the initial legislation against Palestinian rights activism in 2014. We can infer the agenda of both the Democratic and Republican parties to be aligned with the State of Israel to the degree that the American government is willing to suppress the voices of those allied with Palestine to achieve its goals of continuing to support Israel unchallenged. Furthermore, other aspects of social and cultural progress are being silenced by copycat legislation which represents an extrapolation of the precedent of the anti-boycott laws introduced between 2014 and 2021. Overall, the visualization represents a repression of human rights in the United States and an attitude of disregard for the rights of those in Palestine, in favor of the continued attack on their country by the State of Israel.
